Preview and full match card of AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door 2024.
This Sunday, June 30th, 2024, AEW and NJPW present their joint annual pay-per-view event, that being Forbidden Door. It will be the third edition of the show. After Chicago in 2022 and Toronto in 2023, it will take place at the UBS Arena in Long Island, New York. Ten matches are scheduled in total, including five title bouts and one Owen Hart Foundation Men’s Tournament Quarterfinal.
Three World championships on the line
Three World championship matches are scheduled for Forbidden Door 2024, beginning with Swerve Strickland defending the AEW World championship against the International champion Will Ospreay. It will be the fourth title defense of Swerve Strickland since his victory over Samoa Joe at AEW Dynasty, and “The Aerial Assassin” will try to become a double champion next Sunday in Long Island.
The AEW Women’s World champion Toni Storm will also put her title on the line, as she will face Stardom’s Mina Shirakawa. One of the Artist of Stardom champions will try to put an end to a reign that started in November 2023, at AEW Full Gear, when Toni Storm defeated Hikaru Shida to win the AEW Women’s World championship for the third time in her career.
Plus, the IWGP World Heavyweight champion Jon Moxley will defend his championship against Tetsuya Naito in a Windy City Riot rematch. On Friday, April 12th in Chicago, the member of the Blackpool Combat Club pinned Naito to become IWGP World Heavyweight champion for the first time in his career, achieving one of his biggest accomplishments.
Title vs. Title
A fourth championship match will see Mercedes Moné battle Stephanie Vaquer in a Title vs. Title match. Indeed, the AEW TBS championship and the NJPW STRONG Women’s championship will be on the line, and the winner will take all. Mercedes Moné became the TBS champion by defeating Willow Nightingale at AEW Dynasty and Stephanie Vaquer defeated Giulia to win the NJPW STRONG Women’s title back in March.
A Ladder match to crown a new TNT champion
The last title bout of the night will be all about the vacant TNT championship. Six men will clash in a Ladder match to try to be called champion in AEW, and five of them are known at this point: Konosuke Takeshita, the ROH World champion Mark Briscoe, Jack Perry, Dante Martin and Lio Rush. Adam Copeland had to vacate the championship after his Cage match against Malakai Black at Double or Nothing, where he sustained a serious ankle injury following his jump from the top of the structure.
Owen Hart Foundation Men’s Tournament
At Forbidden Door, we will get the chance to witness an Owen Hart Foundation Men’s Tournament Quarterfinal match between Bryan Danielson and Shingo Takagi. Last year, “The American Dragon” faced and defeated Kazuchika Okada on the pay-per-view. He will face a Japanese wrestler from NJPW for the second year in a row at this event. The winner of the contest will advance to the Semifinals and face PAC who had to beat Claudio Castagnoli last week on Dynamite on the first round.
